The damp and overcast weather did not impact on the success of the ninth annual Pick n Pay Hyper 5km Fun Run/Walk for Charity in support of The Sunflower Fund which took place on Sunday, 13th September. The event started at 9.30am from SUNCOAST Amphitheatre and went out onto the promenade and back.
A total of 770 participants donned the latest Sunflower Bandana in support of The Sunflower Fund and loved ones who had lost their battle to leukaemia.
The atmosphere was festive with the Prep Gum Boot Dancers, the Dance Direction dancers and Northlands Girls High School singers and dancers entertaining the crowd.
Five substantial prizes ranging from household products to meal vouchers from Havana Grill were handed over to the delighted lucky draw winners. The raffle prize of a trolley full of groceries valued at R1500, which raised an extra R2 100, went to Precilla Panday.
The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) collected 18 pints of much needed blood during the event.
The 'Rope of Hope', comprised of Sunflower Bandanas tied together, featured along the route and runners added their bandana to the 'Rope' during prize giving.
A total of R38 510 was raised and The Sunflower Fund would like to thank Pick n Pay Hyper, SUNCOAST, Round Table Southern Africa, the media, the City and Durban Metro Police for making the event possible.
