The Sunflower Fund's Women's day celebration |
Womens guests (and two lucky men! ) gathered at The Vineyard Hotel on Saturday 7th August to join two leukaemia survivors - Gawie Marx and Carey Boucher-Erasmus and celebrate Womens Day 2010. These two amazing people shared their stories of how bone marrow stem cell transplants had saved their lives. Exhibitors showcasing art, jewellery, clothing, stationery, scrapbook accessories, solutions management and creative design filled the foyer, and after a delicious lunch with music provided by Palm Strings, Jenny Brown regaled guests with her entertaining talk on how to "Take the Lug out of Luggage". Beauty Therapists were also available to treat the guests to massages.
Funds raised from this event will go towards recruiting more donors from all ethnic races for the South African Bone Marrow Registry. The chances of finding a matching donor outside a patient's immediate family are 1 in 100 000. The Sunflower Fund aims to increase the donor base to give every South African diagnosed with leukaemia a chance of life. |
Thanks to Lindsay Gray and guest speaker Tanya Visser, editor of the Gardener Magazine, a total of R8897 was raised from this fun and informative morning.
Seen at the Lindsay Gray School of Garden Design Breakfast are Jennifer Chapman, Athene Whitfield and Tricia Jelliman. |

WALK FOR CANCER IN AID OF THE SUNFLOWER FUND |
|
Ruth Strombeck, from Rock Painting, Waterproofing and Construction Co., organised a 2km walk through the Cape Town city centre, on Sunday, 31st January, to honour the victims, the fighters and the survivors of cancer. Specifically to remember her mother Daphne Strombeck, who died of cancer. There was a festive atmosphere, as friends and work companions of Ruth's, dressed in something pink, gathered at Bob's Bar in Long street, where the registration took place, and where the walk ended. Ruth had worked tirelessly obtaining prizes for raffles, and was donated books and pink champagne - which she sold by the glass.
Families and dogs enjoyed the relaxed, fun walk. Ruth was donated metres of yellow fabric, on which people wrote messages. This is going to be made into a giant soccer shirt, trimmed in green and white, and will be displayed at soccer World Cup venues. A total amount of nearly R16 000 was raised.

SUMMIT COLLEGE BOYS CYCLE 94.7 |
Seen here with Tricia Hobson (Gauteng) are her son Cameron, Cameron and Joshua Perkins and Joshua Henstock receiving their certificate of thanks for the efforts they made raising funds by cycling the 94.7 cycle challenge. They braved very hot weather and cycled for half an hour in the challenge and raised R6000 in total, so these youngsters have raised enough money to place 6 new donors on the South African Bone Marrow Registry. Summit College students are committed to put a large team forward for next year and follow the good example set. Well done boys!!

KZN is full of Love and full of Hope! |
|
KZN’s Love and Hope event started with tears brought on by Tenley Cummings of The Sunflower Fund who explained what four young leukaemia patients have been through this year followed by the emotional music video for Lauren Laing’s original song ‘The Day I Sang for You’ which featured the patients. The event ended with the audience in tears of laughter while the appropriately dressed Gee Jays performed the YMCA. The show, ‘Who’s your Daddy’ had the audience entertained from beginning to end. The entertainment and delicious meal was broken up by a hugely successful charity auction conducted by The Alliance Group’s Andrew Miller. A big thank you to auction item sponsors Sumner Signs, Coretalk, Bella Body, Lisa Raleigh, DressbyLynnE, Craig Charity and Hirsch.

Denim and Diamond Event Shines |
|
WC decided against having a ball this year and instead chose to have an informal, fun dance. The theme was “Denim and Diamonds” where guests were invited to come dressed relaxed but with a bit of glamour and glitz! From the time one stepped into the Mears Centre the mood was set! Music was provided by the all famous LATE FINAL band which ensured the success of the evening. Their choice of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s music made sure that most guests spent the evening dancing!
Twelve beautifully decorated glitzy cupcakes, decorated with a pair of denim jeans in marzipan, were donated by The Cup Cake Boutique as a Lucky Draw Prize. One of the cup cakes had a diamond inside donated by Mark Solomon Jewellers!
The evening was an outstanding success, thank you to all those who attended.
