A ‘Cops-4-Cancer’ project was initiated by Captain Beryl Adami of the Uitenhage SAPS, in 2009 after the decision was made to support the fight against cancer. The project was well supported by the police and the local community.
On 20th August, 2010, a 5km fun walk / run and a mini Carnival was organised. CANSA was invited to conduct a shavathon, together with the Bloodbank, who held a blood donation drive. Amongst the carnival events was a tea garden, where people paid an amount of R20 for tea and cake. All this activity and fundraising culminated in an amount of R13 000 being raised, and The Sunflower Fund are the grateful recipients of this donation this year. Captain Adami was ecstatic about the amount of money that had been raised. “It was good to see the camaraderie between the different departments. The event was well supported by the SAPS and this support is indicative of how this disease affects both the victims and their families alike. Due to its success, we hope to make this event an annual one”, said Capt. Adami. |

Beautifully created and carefully crafted quilts, made by quilters from Creative Quilters, the Goodhope Quilter’s Guild and the Table Mountain Quilters, were delivered to the office of The Sunflower Fund in Westlake Lifestyle Centre recently. Since October 2009, when The Sunflower Fund’s ‘Rope of Hope’ campaign came to a close, ladies from these quilting guilds have been hard at work , stitching together the most amazing quilts and duvet covers. Schools throughout the peninsula donated back Bandanas, and these were collected, tied together into a rope, in excess of 4 kilometres! This was displayed at The V & A Waterfront. The inspiration of last year’s Bandana design – ‘Circles of Life’ – provided the perfect answer to The Sunflower Fund, as to what to do with these wonderful creations. Children’s Homes, caring for orphanages and abandoned children, hospices and hospitals were contacted, and there have been many happy recipients of these colourful quilts and duvet covers. The Sunflower Fund is indebted to these quilters, who share their passion – ‘Share a Little, to Save a Life’. Seen proudly displaying the fruits of their creative endeavours, are Elizabeth Davey, Karen Nicole and Ann van der Riet of the Table Mountain Quilters. |

Sunflower duvets for Red Cross Hospital |
Red Cross Hospital staff showing off their Sunflower Bandana duvets created by Alison Price, are Sister Michael, Professor Wendy Spearman, Dr Peter Nourse and Sister Pieters.
Alison Price spent many hours in ward E2 of the Red Cross Hospital when her little girl Lara was in need of a liver transplant. Sadly Lara did not make it but Alison will never forget the love and dedication of the hospital staff.
Alison contacted The Sunflower Fund in KZN and was sent the bandanas from their ‘Rope of Hope’. She has since created sixty duvets for the hospital which really brighten up the ward and lift the spirits of the young patients. Our vision for the ‘Rope of Hope’ is that the bandanas give hope to those in need on a daily basis and not just on National Bandana Day. “Thank you Alison for fulfilling this vision”. Should you wish to participate in the KZN ‘Rope of Hope’ at SUNCOAST on Sunday, 19th September please email

Sunflower Quilts for Children - Fikelela's Children's Centre |
Sunflower Fund Bandanas, which were collected in the 2009 ‘Rope of Hope campaign’ were made into quilts by the Cape Quilters Guild, and brought to the offices of The Sunflower Fund, for donation to a worthwhile cause. Fikekela home – for abandoned and orphaned children – was identified to be the recipients of the donation, by Nontobeko Mpeqeka, Donor Liasion Officer at The Sunflower Fund. Fikelela Children’s Centre, situated in Makhaya, Khayelitsha, looks after 36 children from birth to 8 years old. Care and medication is given to the children by a dedicated staff, managed by Posiza Matoti, who was thrilled with the colourful quilts. The Sunflower Fund is encouraging people of all ethnic groups to come forward to become donors on the South African Bone Marrow Registry, and give people diagnosed with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders, another chance of life. 75 % of people diagnosed with leukaemia are under the age of 25 yrs. |
