Walk for a Cause

Sonja Grobler, Susan  Myburgh and Mari  Maass together with their back up person Ronelle  van Wyk  embarked on the challenge of walking from Cape Town to Upington over a period of 14 days and were inspired to support The Sunflower Fund by Lizette Visser of Pathcare who will join them in the second week of their walk.

They have ensured that they will create much awareness and the need for donors  to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry along their way.

Walk for a Cause Update
Day 1 (30km)
27th July 2009.
Our journey started on a crisp bright winters morning at the Medi Clinic in Paarl.  We were received with much warmth and enthusiasm by the Corne PRO  of  Medi clinic  Clinic and the Manager , and two representatives from the Sunflower Fund – The PR Manager , Adi Phillips and Chris Moir – PR Coordinator .
After a photo session with the photographers from the Burger and the Paarl gazette  we set off in the direction of Riebeeck Kasteel.  Walking along the main road we accosted pedestrians and joggers handing out  the Sunflower foundation flyers given to us.  Walked for 10 km until the road became to busy .  Our driver picked us up and dropped us off  10 outside of Riebeeck Kasteel.  We had tea and then proceeded along in the direction of Malmesbury. Being a busy road we decided to do the last leg of our walk near Darling.  After watching the Springbucks thrash the Loins into submission in Darling we concluded our days walk by walking the final 3 kilometers to our B&b.
We encountered many wonderful people today .  We met two young men from Upington who promptly wanted more info in order to donate money in aid of the Sunflower Fund.  One of the young ones' grandmother died of leukemia.

Day 2 (30km)
28th July 20009
We hiked around the quant town of Darling.  The weather was perfect and we made good time.  At the end of the day we were tired and a few blisters started to appear but all in all we had a wonderful day.

Day 3
29th June 2009-06-29

Day 3 proved to be a difficult day for all of us.  We started at the West Coast Nature Reserve outside of Darling.  But  an administrative glitch prevented us from walking through the park.  We had to alter our plans for the day and had to change our route to tar roads with a lot of traffic around Langebaan.  Walking on a tar road with cars and lorries driving past is very strenuous .  We visited the Path Care Laboratories in Vredenburg and were met with warmth and a cool glass of fruit juice.  Thank you very much to Chris, Betsie and Alta .  The day ended at 17h30 at St Helena Bay.  One of our team members contracted  gastoenteritis but despite an aching tummy and nausea she finished the 30 kilometers.  Another team member walked 25 kilometers with huge blisters on her feet.  True dedication!  Well done both of you.
