“A touch of Africa” was the theme of the cocktail evening which was held in support of The Sunflower Fund at the Gateway Hotel, Umhlanga, on Friday 5th February.
Guest speaker, Kingsley Holgate, renowned humanitarian, adventurer, author, TV personality and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, captivated the audience as he took them through an enthralling journey of his latest expedition into the Congo to the “Heart of Africa”.
On arrival the 160 guests received a Robertson’s sparkling wine and an array of scrumptious snacks. After the official welcome by the MC for the evening, Penelope Kirkland, a moving video was shown following a poignant speech by The Sunflower Fund’s Allison Ekstrand. It was then that the man of the evening took to the stage. Guests were so inspired that an auction for a personally autographed book written by Kingsley, which is no longer is print, fetched a whopping R5000.
The event was a resounding success and raised a notable R26 000, which will go toward building the South African Bone Marrow Registry and directly give hope to patients diagnosed with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders. A big thank you to all who attended this event, prize sponsors and associated main sponsors Yamaha SA, Land Rover Umhlanga, Gateway Hotel, Vinimark, Steph Stein Photography and Anthony Done of Topjocks.
