The Sunflower Fund was involved in the ACS Cancer information and Advocacy Initiative Collaboration Workshop in July 2009, where various organizations shared thoughts, experiences and ideas about cancer and cancer control in South Africa. The Africa Cancer Information and Advocacy Initiative’s overall objective is around increased awareness and advocacy through research or pilot data and media or legislative campaigns. The patient empowerment initiative is an activity within the Africa Cancer Information and Advocacy Initiative and follows a model developed by UICC (International Union against Cancer) and member/partner organizations, ACS (American Cancer Society) & LAF (Lance Armstrong Foundation).
Once plans have been finalized and formally announced by ACS, The Sunflower Fund will be involved in collaborating with other Cancer organizations in SA and play an important role in helping to try to break down the social stigma associated with cancer, highlighting social and economic issues and revealing cultural differences that may need to be actively addressed.
We support and refer to other organizations such as
Organ Donor Foundation, CHOC, CANSA.
