SABMR – South African Bone Marrow Registry

sabmr

We work closely with The South African Bone Marrow Registry which is the HUB centre for Africa and is responsible for processing requests for haematopoietic stem cells (HSC) from unrelated donors emanating locally and from abroad.

The initiative to establish the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) was taken by Professor Ernette du Toit and Professor Peter Jacobs in 1991. The SABMR is now accepted as a full participant in the world-wide programme, having provided donors to local patients as well as international patients.

In addition to routine blood donor clinics scheduled by The South African National Blood Service (SANBS), there are a number of special services of which you can participate in special bleeding programmes aimed at addressing specific needs.

These include:

The Blood Service and Bone Marrow Donation:
In some centres SANBS collects peripheral blood stem cells from donors identified through the SABMR, in addition to testing and registering potential bone marrow donors.

A registration cost does apply.

The Sunflower Fund are members of this Alliance

ACS & LAF – American Cancer Society And Lance Armstrong Foundation

acs lafThe Sunflower Fund was involved in the ACS Cancer information and Advocacy Initiative Collaboration Workshop in July 2009, where various organizations shared thoughts, experiences and ideas about cancer and cancer control in South Africa. The Africa Cancer Information and Advocacy Initiative’s overall objective is around increased awareness and advocacy through research or pilot data and media or legislative campaigns. The patient empowerment initiative is an activity within the Africa Cancer Information and Advocacy Initiative and follows a model developed by UICC (International Union against Cancer) and member/partner organizations, ACS (American Cancer Society) & LAF (Lance Armstrong Foundation).

Once plans have been finalized and formally announced by ACS, The Sunflower Fund will be involved in collaborating with other Cancer organizations in SA and play an important role in helping to try to break down the social stigma associated with cancer, highlighting social and economic issues and revealing cultural differences that may need to be actively addressed.

We support and refer to other organizations such as
Organ Donor Foundation, CHOC, CANSA
