The Comrades Marathon, 'the ultimate human race', has a lot in common with our cause. It is a race which someone cannot do on their own. Runners need a club, people to train with, supporters on the route and refreshment stations. It is often a stranger who gets them across the finish line.

The Sunflower Fund relies on people to become bone marrow stem cell donors for leukaemia patients in need of a transplant. If you are a donor match you will be that patient's only chance of survival. You will never meet the patient but you could save their life.

The Sunflower Fund also relies on donations in order to pay for the tissue typing of potential donors. It costs R2 500 to tissue type a potential donor and the chances of finding a donor match is 1:100 000 within your ethnic group.

Please support our Miles4Marrow Runners and share a little to save a life.

Why Don't You Share a Little as You Run The Old Mutual two Oceans Marathon 7 April 2012

two oceansWhile pounding the road on the 7th April, spare a thought and raise some funds to help those who cannot run this year.  The ‘Miles4Marrow’ campaign, an initiative from The Sunflower Fund, encourages athletes to enlist support of family, friends and work colleagues to sponsor an amount per mile run, thereby raising much needed funds to pay for more people to become donors and join the South African Bone Marrow Registry.  This will give hope to those suffering from leukaemia and other blood disorders, to have another chance to life.

We are appealing for  interested cyclists  participating in the 2012 Argus Cycle Tour  to  help raise  awareness and funds for The Sunflower Fund.  It’s simple  - all you need to do is email your friends, family and colleagues,  challenging them to sponsor you for your effort and hard work.  If everyone raised a small amount, collectively , it could amount to enough to help us pay for the donors willing to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry.

Comrades Marathon 29th May 2011

Comrades runners rely on the support of the crowds and the camaraderie of fellow runners to succeed. For the majority of children and young adults diagnosed with leukaemia, survival is not possible without a bone marrow stem cell transplant from a matching donor. The Sunflower Fund builds the South African Marrow Registry so leukaemia sufferers can find a donor match but they cannot do it without the help of others.

Support these runners as they embark on the 2011 56miles4marrow campaign by sponsoring them financially per mile run on the 29th May. The comrades Marathon is a total of 89kms/ 56miles and no amount is too small so 'Share a Little to Save a Life'.

Supporters gearing up for Comrades

Comrades Sunflower TentJanine Le Roux from The Sunflower Fund set up a fun supporters area with a ‘Rope of Hope’ outside Kearsney College for the 56Miles4Marrow runners who took on the Comrades to raise much needed money and awareness for The Sunflower Fund. Twenty one runners took part this year and received sponsorship per mile covered on the day – 56 in total. The campaign has been going for three years in KZN and has raised R 489 000 to date. This has paid for 489 bone marrow stem cell donors to be included on the South African Bone Marrow Registry. One of these donors could be a match for a child or young adult diagnosed with leukaemia and in turn save their life.

Please support our runners and make a deposit into our account and reference it KZN M4M (sponsors name). No amount is too small so please ‘share a little to save a life’.
