Sibongile Mkwanazi

survivor-sibongile-mkwanaziSibongile Mkwanazi is a multi talented young lady who lives life with passion. Sibongile says: “I was called to be victorious in this life and I refuse to be a victim”. She is originally from Kroonstad but moved to Bloemfontein with her mother to be closer to the hospital when she was diagnosed with Leukemia at age 14. They live in a small shack in Batho Location and her mother is a domestic worker.

She was admitted at Universitas Academic Hospital in Bloemfontein for 6 months however, this young girl tried to commit suicide twice.  This was because of the tremendous burden she felt of being so different from the other children at her school and she also couldn’t bear to see her mother going through so much heartache.

Thankfully she has made it through as a survivor and is stronger than ever. Sibongile is an inspiration to so many and carries hope wherever she goes. She is a student in Grade 10 at St Bernard’s High, a motivational speaker, poet and actress. She currently holds the 2014 Miss Queen For The Day organised by Reach for a Dream Foundation. She has also published her first poetry book sharing her experiences titled “The Journey of a Cancer Survivor”.

In October 2014, Sibongile was nominated to be the face of The Sunflower Fund during the Macufe Cup 2014 in Bloemfontein to promote the tournament’s CSI initiative of supporting The Sunflower Fund’s National Bandana Day. She also has initiated a campaign to collect teddy bears and donate them to children sick in hospital.

We salute Sibongile for her bravery and her desire to make a difference in the lives of those suffering with Leukaemia and other life threatening blood disorders.
