Education and awareness, as well as the recruitment and testing of donors are inextricably linked; the one activity cannot happen in isolation of the others. They are an integral part of every project TSF embarks on and these activities include educating the public about:
- The role of The Sunflower Fund and the need to build the registry;
- The donor/patient relationship and the process of a stem cell transplant; and
- Dispelling the myths surrounding stem cell donation process.
Individuals or groups also receive information packs and promotional materials to encourage friends and family to join. All educational literature has been translated into five languages (Afrikaans, English, Xhosa, Zulu and Sotho) and has animated colour drawings demonstrating the stem cell donation process. The organisation has also launched an educational DVD, which is given free of charge to donors, sponsors, press and the general public.
All informative talks and education sessions are aimed at educating and engaging with people in a way that encourages action – to become donors themselves, to pass the information on to those who are eligible or to assist the organisation by donating funds to support the HLA tests for others.
The organisation’s provincial and National Marketing and PR activities include:
- Fundraising events
- Information and education campaigns
- Media events
- Donor recruitment drives
- Social media promotions
- National and local campaigns and competitions.
