I am riding in my sixth Cape Town Cycle Tour, the largest timed cycle race in the world. I am riding for a charity called The Sunflower fund and they help match donors for Leukaemia patients. This charity is particularly close to my heart for a number of reasons.
Firstly, because it started from a tragic death of a young man (not even 20 yet) and his mother took that grief and started a project to undertake that more people would be on a registry so that no one else would have to go through what her and Chris had to. She is an incredibly inspiring woman that is doing fantastic work. Secondly, one of my best friends was at school with Chris and knew him well – I only found this out after I started raising money last year.
Lastly, a colleague of ours at Distell was a successful recipient and is currently in remission and getting stronger every day. It is an amazing feeling to see and meet someone who has been through this process and been given a second life.
I'm passionate about helping people and this is another reason this is so close to my heart. Working together to help other people? It's the best feeling in the world and we can potentially save even just one persons life.
That's definitely worth doing!
